Guest Blogger: Dermatoligist on Pores

"Open Pores" – What They Are and How to Treat and Prevent Them

"Open pores" are not a medical condition but the term is heard often enough in medical cosmetic practice that it may as well be.
Despite its prevalence as a complaint, open pores (or "the appearance of pores" as the cosmetics industry carefully refers to them) are poorly addressed.
It is common for patients to be told "pores don't open and close – their size is fixed" but this is no assurance to anyone who looks in the mirror and finds evidence to the contrary!
Dermatologists, plastic surgeons, cosmetic physicians and beauty therapists have different methods by which to to address the overall texture of skin, however pore appearance remains a perennial complaint.

Why Is Pore Appearance A Concern?

The simple answer to this question is because it comes up so often. Large pores aren't thought of as a disease yet they can cause distress affecting quality of life. Patients frequently report that they haven't liked the look of their pores for years and that the visibility of their pores has been worsening since puberty. That's a long time to put up with something that can be handled with little effort.
Frequently, addressing pore appearance successfully makes more of a difference in making a patient look healthy, young and vibrant than more expensive and involved procedures for other concerns like wrinkles.

What Affects Pore Appearance?

While pore size is determined by our genes at the outset, our lifestyles, the environment and skin care habits all make a huge difference. The impact of nature over nurture is often cited as difficult to determine and quantify however it's clear that you can be born with essentially invisible pores and grow up to have, or develop much later in life, pores which are far from their original state.
Pore appearance is worsened by collagen and elastin degradation – due to intrinsic and extrinsic aging – and congestion within the pores – due to a process similar to acne.
Initially, you can be affected by one or both of these factors, however the longer you leave congested pores "as-is" the more collagen and elastin degradation occurs and the more permanent your pore problem becomes. This is because pores congested with unwanted and unnecessary materials (like dead cells and oils) stretch the pores.
When they have been stretched for long enough they will no longer return to their original size without coaxing, even once the unwanted pore-clogging material has been removed.
Thankfully, there are treatments which are the equal and better of these phenomena, but don't be too complacent because the longer you leave an aesthetic complaint linger the slower, more tedious and expensive the treatment will become and the more likely it will be associated with side effects.

Treatment of Visible "Open" Pores

The treatment of open pores should address all causes in order to be the most effective possible and to provide the most durable results.
Why shouldn't you have clear, tight pores 7 days a week?

Treating Congestion

Pores made visible by congestion – highlighted by wastes within the pore which look different to the surrounding skin – are addressed by treatments which unplug the pores and prevent future blockages.
This should be seen as different from temporary methods which lift a portion of the waste from the pores or mask their appearance cosmetically but do nothing fundamental to the underlying problem.
Pore strips and manual squeezing or "extractions" at home or by beauty therapists (which pull out a portion of a blocked pore) and facial masks (which cause the upper layers of the skin to swell somewhat, giving the appearance of tighter pores) fall into this category.
With these approaches it's never long (perhaps as little as a few hours) before the poorly functioning pores refill with oil and debris or return to a more natural, less hydrated and less plumped or swollen state.
Makeup and "pore minimizer products" such as matte-finish moisturizers and makeup primers aren't much good either and in many cases encourage blockages to remain by sealing off the skin's surface, preventing oils and dead skin cells from leaving the pores.

Treating Collagen and Elastin Degradation

Due to the effects of chronological aging, extrinsic aging (such as environmentally-derived aging, particularly UV exposure) and (if a factor) the distension of the pores by retained oils, dead skin cells and other wastes, skin's collagen and elastin decline in quality and quantity.
This is a key target for effective treatment because these two substances make up what skin fundamentally is, providing it with structure, substance and, most importantly, the ability to snap back to its originally (genetically-determined form).
The quantity of collagen and elastin in your skin can be restored with treatments which stimulate collagen and elastin production, but are only markedly effective when combined with treatments and measures which also help prevent the excessive breakdown of these two substances.

Treatment – In Essence

Effective treatment of open pores requires ingredients which stimulate renewal of collagen and elastin (ingredients which hasten the cell cycle), prevent and clear pore blockage (comedolytics) anti-inflammatories, antioxidants and sunscreens (which prevent the breakdown of your new, higher quality collagen and elastin that will help give your skin back the strength and "bounce" to restore a more normal and tighter pore structure and function).
These ingredients have to be used in high enough concentrations and be able to be absorbed by the skin in order to actually work.

Sound Complicated?

If you head to the beauty salon, cosmetics counter or look around online you will encounter a plethora of seemingly promising but ultimately very superficially effective and often only notional solutions requiring multiple products taking an inordinate amount of time to implement.
As you try these solutions (and it would take years to get through all of them!) your pores will be getting incrementally worse.
Sunscreen is the only product widely available which helps prevent collagen and elastin breakdown, however if you use it alone you'll likely find it clogs your pores somewhat.
For a sunscreen that's not going to clog your pores, look for those containing zinc oxide, or better yet look for Japanese, European or Australian sunscreens – they contain far more skin-friendly and effective sunscreen agents than those currently available in the US.

Open Pores – The Dermatologist's Response

Melbourne Dermatology has found that the most effective ingredients for treating open pores are salicylic acid, mandelic acid, retinoic acid, benzoyl peroxide, pyruvic acid and some forms of zinc. These have the potential to treat and prevent both pore congestion and collagen and elastin degradation.
When used in combinations at the right percentages and in a stable formula able to be absorbed by skin some of these ingredients perform better than when used alone, producing more impressive results with fewer (if any) side effects.
Treatment of open pores does not necessarily require office visits. MD Rx Open Pores Overnight Solution was developed to enhance patient outcomes by tackling an extremely common and recurrent concern. It contains a selection of the above ingredients. This product is usually used alone for at least 6 weeks (once or twice weekly) in conjunction with a sunscreen during the day and is greatly effective in the majority of cases.
If after 6 weeks the patient is not satisifed or would like faster progress then more aggressive, but similar treatments are used, including in-office procedures. Even when this is the case, the MD Rx Open Pores Overnight Solution is the preferred preparation for further treament and must be used for at least 2 weeks prior to a professional medical treatment to ensure a good and safe outcome.
A low-GI diet based on whole foods high in naturally-occuring antioxidants, avoiding sugar and stress also help correct and maintain pore appearance, primarily by reducing inflammation which highlights the appearance of the pores, reducing collagen and elastin breakdown from glycation and reducing excessive oil flow which blocks pores.
Appropriate skin care supports treatment and should include non-comedogenic products containing beneficial levels of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and sunscreens (preferably zinc or from outside the US).
Supplementary treatments can include laser and Botox (which can reduce pore size by relaxing the walls of the pore) but are not normally required.

Favourite Online Shops

Hi everyone,

So in all honestly, my name is Emily and I am an online shopping addict.  Over the years, I have compiled quite a list of my favourite online shops and I thought I would share with you which shops I love.  I'm pretty sure some of these shops have actual stores.  Also, I do go through Wanelo to online shop a lot of the time so I just thought I would quickly mention it.  So let's get started my fellow online shoppers.

The first online store is Tobi.  Tobi is a great site and they have new arrivals every day which are always 30% off.  New members at Tobi get 50% off their first purchase and there are always sales on the site (Currently 40% off sitewide with the discount code December40).  The clothes are extremely in style and from what I have ordered, good quality.  They also carry brand names like Doc Martens so if you want shoes for 50% off Tobi is a great site.  Not to mention free shipping internationally.

Nasty Gal is one of my favourite sites.  The clothing is a bit more expensive however, the quality and design make the price worth the item in my opinion.  I am in love with the designs on this site.  They have a great variety of all clothing and I can spend hours going through this site.  They also have a great (but quite expensive) vintage selection on their site.

Asos is probably my favourite online store.  The sale section is a great place to find high end brands (including my personal favourite - Wildfox) at a relatively discounted price.  Also the selection on this site borders on insanity.  Shipping is free internationally I believe as well.  Asos is based in the UK so it has many English brands like Primark that you cannot find anywhere else including their own brand Asos.  Definitely worth a look at.

Sabo Skirt probably has my favourite designs out of all the online shops.  The only issue I have with Sabo Skirt is that shipping takes quite awhile as it is based in Australia.  Thankfully, in recent months, Sabo Skirt has places a $10 flat rate on all international shipping orders with free shipping over $150 ($50 if you are in Australia).  The clothes are decently prices and good quality and the designs are very original and trendy.  They always have new arrivals as well!

I rarely order from Jac Vanek but I absolutely love their clothes.  They are quite different and funny with quotes like "I Hate Everyone" on the back of vintage flannel but I am in love with 80% of the clothes on the site.  However, the reason I order so rarely is because the clothes are expensive but the shipping can cost more than the clothing itself.  I usually wait until Jac Vanek has a promotion so I don't end up paying $89 for shipping.  The clothes are all very unique (for the vintage clothing you'll be the only one who has it) and cute and the quality is good as well.

So I can go on forever about online shopping but I feel like now that you have a good enough range you can start your massive spending spree with all the holiday money you will get this year.  I hope you enjoyed this post and I feel like there will be a sequel to this post in the New Year (I am a self-confessed online shopping addict).  I love you all so much and thank you so much for reading xx.

Insta-Fashion

Hiii everyone,

Unfortunately, my dad has gone away on vacation and has taken my camera so lately I've been doing my Style Diary pictures on my phone.  I think this will continue throughout my blog as it is easy to do and sometimes I just don't have enough time to take actual pictures so mirror selfies are always the answer.  So here are a few looks from my iPhone.

Shirt: Wilfred - Aritzia
Pants: Zara
 Shoes: Hibou - Little Burgundy

Shirt: Wifred Free - Aritzia
Cardigan: TopShop
Skirt: Brandy Melville
Socks: TopShop
Boots: Hibou - Little Burgundy

Top: Wilfred - Aritzia
Jeans: TopShop
Jacket: Zara
Boots: Hibou - Little Burgundy

So those are three of my latest outfits I hope you all enjoyed this post.  I am so sorry for the quality of the pictures but it's the best I could do under the circumstances.  I hope to have another personal post for you guys to see very soon and a bunch of outfits as the holidays are coming shortly (meaning more weekly outfits as I do wear a uniform at school).  Thank you so much for reading and I love you all xx

Style Diary: Dad's Birthday Dinner - November 20th 2013

Hiiiii,

So a few weeks ago, my family went out to dinner to celebrate my dad's birthday.  Since I did dress decently (and not in all black for once) I decided to take pictures (that were not mirror selfies amazingly) of my outfit of the night.  I actually really liked this outfit so I will probably recreate it switching up some pieces.  It was inspired by a picture I saw of Lily Collins which, if I can find I will attach at the end.

Kimono - Zara / Tank Top - Garage / Leather Leggings - Wifred Free Aritzia

Shoes - Madden Girl

The picture of Lily Collins I got inspiration from:

So that is it for my quick outfit of the night.  I hope you all enjoyed this post and I am thinking of doing more celebrity inspired outfits since I am always on Tumblr.  Amazingly enough, I have never recreated a look from my all time favourite style icon Alexa Chung.  Unfortunately, I dress too much like Wednesday Adams rather than take daring risks like Chung.  Thank you for reading and comments on anything are appreciated.  Looooveeeee ya xx

Style Diary: Extremely Delayed Halloween Outfit

Hiiii everyone,

So even though Halloween was nearly a month ago, I did still want to share my homemade costume with you guys mainly because I really wanted to remember the tedious hours I spent making this costume.  Plus, this ties into the more personal aspect of my blog that has been missing recently mainly because I don't take my blogging camera out with me but I usually use my iPhone which unfortunately has lower picture quality.  I guess I have to suck it up and post my iPhone pictures or start remembering to charge my camera.

I don't know if you can tell from my picture but for Halloween me and a few friends decided to be fairies.  I did have a wand at school but somehow I managed to lose it throughout the day.  I would have worn wings but for those of you who do not know going through crowded high school hallways with wings is the definition of a nightmare.

So that was my school Halloween costume.  I hope you all enjoyed this post and I do have an actual style diary with a genuinely nice outfit (HINT: it's not all black???).  So even though this is extremely late, what were you for Halloween if you dressed up?  Thanks for reading, looove ya xx

Sweater Weather Tag!

Hiii everyone!

So today I have a quick tag post since it is my favourite season Autumn, and it is getting colder I figured I should do this tag before it snows where I live.  Now everyone is obsessed with sweater weather (which I alternatively call Leather weather because let's be real... I have a deep love for leather jackets) so I thought this tag would be appropriate and fun to do.  It also gives me a break to better plan my outfits since I have been getting lazy on the weekends recently (I do have my Halloween costume coming up next week even though its really delayed!!).  I'm just going to shut up and get into the questions.

1. Favorite candle scent?
There's a brand called Fringe and their candle in Rose Cassis is my favourite all year round however I do love Bombay's Jasmine Vanilla and the White Company's Wild Mint.

2. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

Definitely tea, but now that it's red cup season I can't avoid my love for Peppermint Hot Chocolates at Starbucks.

3. What's the best fall memory you have?

I honestly cannot choose one, Autumnal season is always the funniest for me because it's not too cold or too hot so I usually go out every weekend and to choose one memory would just not be right.

4. Which makeup trend do you prefer: dark lips or winged eyeliner?

DARK LIPS!! I was actually going to make a post about this but I adore dark red lipstick I think it looks amazing on and I recently purchased Dark Side by MAC and I am so in love with it.  I am also quite bias because I cannot evenly wing my eyeliner for the life of me.

5. Best fragrance for fall?

Once again, I do not really change my fragrance according to season mainly because I do not like muskier scents or cinnamon so right now I have been using Daisy Eau So Fraiche by Marc Jacobs.

6. Favourite Thanksgiving food?

Since I'm Canadian Thanksgiving was already in October for me.  My mum hates turkey so for Thanksgiving we usually just have prime rib but honestly I would take prime rib over turkey any day.

7. What is autumn weather like where you live?

It would be fair to say the weather this year is very undecided.  We're getting into the negative degrees lately so it is quite cold but there are weeks where it hits mid 10's.

8. Most worn sweater?

I have way too many sweaters to choose one but I would say my Wildfox jumper or my black jumper from TopShop which I surprisingly do not think I have ever featured in a blog post.

9. Must-have nail polish this fall?

I love black nail polish for Autumn, the one I use now is by Barry M but this year, since I wear a lot of black clothing I've been loving dark red or burgundies, the one I usually wear is OPI's We'll Always Have Paris.

10. Football games or jumping in leaf piles?

Jumping in leaf piles no doubt about it.

11. Skinny jeans or leggings?

If I'm going out black skinny jeans!

12. Combat boots or Uggs?

Honestly, I am guilty of wearing Uggs but I hate them but no my animosity towards how ugly they are will not compromise the comfort I get while wearing them.  However, I live in my Doc Martens so can I be difficult and go with my Docs?  Also I'm currently obsessed with Chelsea boots!

13. Is pumpkin spice worth the hype?

I personally don't like pumpkin flavoured items...

14. Favourite fall TV show?

Awkward, hands down.  I am madly in love with Matty McKibben you have no idea.

15. What song really gets you into the fall spirit?

There's not one song that reminds me of Autumn that I listen to every year but I've been Luv, Don't Hold Me Down by the Drowners for this whole season!

So that's it for my post today!  I tag everyone who reads it to do this in the comments or even on your own blog even though you don't need to be tagged to actually do tags - down with social constructs.  I hope you all enjoyed and until next time with my very delayed Halloween costume a month after Halloween is over.  I'm so sorry that I have been so consumed in my social and academic life lately!  Love yoooou! xx

All Black Everything!

Hiiiiiiii everyone,

So black is back and better than ever and I for one could not be any happier!  This fall and winter season, all black outfits are the new trend.  I love wearing all black and I have a bit of an unrealistic goal to make my whole wardrobe all black (who am I kidding I love burgundy and navy too much) but a girl can dream.  This Autumn term the trends include a whole lot of black leather, sweaters and denim.  Excuse me as a shriek with approval.  Black is THE colour (or shade for all you colour snobs).  It's simple yet it's always fashionable and sleek.  Honestly, I could not be happier with this trend because in my case it's basically a life style.  Below are some cool street style dressed in black, head to toe, looks that i found browsing Tumblr.

So that's just a little update on the newest old trend.  A lot of my new style diaries are going to involve a lot of black since I do wear quite a lot of neutrals now (I essentially live in black and white currently).  I hope you all enjoyed this post and love that black is back because I could not be any happier. Thank you so much for reading.  Love yoooou xx

Style Diary: Leather Leggings

Hiiiii,

So sorry I haven't been able to update recently.  My life has been crazy busy trying to juggle senior year, univerisity applications, assignments and a social life.  Today I managed to come home a bit earlier than usual and decided to take a few pictures of my outfits.  My friends had a little music gig that I was invited to watch so I took this opportunity to wear my beloved (faux) leather leggings that you will probably see featured in many blog posts since I'm obsessed with them.  I highly doubt y'all read these little blurbs anymore so on with the pictures...

Top: Old Navy // Cardigan: TopShop // Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs

Leggings: Wilfred Free - Aritzia // Shoes: Madden Girl

So that is my little style diary for today.  I hope you liked this post and let me know how you style leather leggings because I always have trouble when it comes to styling these.  If you're looking to buy a pair of faux leather pants I would for sure suggest these, they are so comfy - even though they're pricey - I think they were well worth the money.  Thank you so much for reading I appreciate it so much.  Until next time, xx.

Tune Love!!!

Hiiii everyone,

So I would just like to apologize for the lack of blog posts.  School recently just started and its extremely hard to manage senior year, my social life and this blog so forgive me (once again) for neglecting you.  I got an email from a lovely follower (if you don't follow my blog already you should), complimenting my music taste from the music tag I did  - I would like to thank you again as it means a lot to me- and asking for me to do a blog post with my favourite songs.  Music is something I adore as you can probably tell with all the concerts I go to and I would love to share with you some of my favourite songs at the moment and hopefully these posts will make several appearances.  So without any more dumb text, let me get into my music (click the song name for a YouTube link to the song).

No. 1 Party Anthem - Arctic Monkeys (fave band - this whole album is amazing!!)

The Wire - HAIM (all their stuff is great)

So those are a few songs that I've been loving and it could go on forever but you've got to draw the line somewhere.  I hope you guys like these posts and maybe even you like my music taste?? Anyways if you do like my music taste I have an 8tracks account where I create playlist.  Feel free to follow me on it.  Anyways, I will try my best to make another blog post when I can.  Have a great day cuties, love youuuu x
